September Event Date

BBQ & Boule Afternoon 1pm. SUNDAY 11th September Scout & Guide Hut, off Admirals Close.
NOTE - an important DATE for next year's diary is 2nd - 5th JUNE '17 This is the weekend when our French friends visit us in Colney Heath.

A brief report on the recent visit to Boissy St. Yon.

Everyone arrived promptly at the car park next to the school so the coach departed exactly on time at 6.15am. We had a smooth drive to Dover and boarded our ferry after only a short delay. By 9.15am most of us were enjoying a much anticipated breakfast. Our trip across France was uneventful and very familiar from previous visits. As we approached Boissy we all put on our XXL sized, white ABAI T-shirts that we had been given the previous year. We arrived in Rue Pasteur, near the centre of Boissy to see a crowd of forty or so friends similarly dressed. Then it was time for lots of hugs and kisses on both cheeks from our twin family and what seemed like half the village. Our French friends formally introduced our new member, Iris, on her first visit to Boissy, to her host Pascaline. Photos were taken , see here, before we all went off to our hosts' homes for an evening of good dining and catching up on family news.

The next time we all got together was on Saturday evening when we embarked on an hour's journey to a guinguette on the banks of the river Marne. A guinguette is a traditional water-side venue, outside Paris for entertainment. The weather was kind so we were able to drink our aperitifs outside overlooking the river before going inside for dinner and dancing. Very quickly it was midnight and time to depart. Sunday, like Saturday, was spent with our French families. Activities varied from walking around the village, to visiting Paris or a local château, to having a BBQ with our hosts and their family.

Then it was Monday morning and time to depart. We had spent more than two full days with our hosts but the time had passed in a flash. Our coach journey north around Paris was quite slow so we were only able to stop for a total of two hours for lunch and shopping during our return journey. To make the most of this time we stopped at a large supermarché near Arras, which in addition to fully stocked shelves, had a café with a surprisingly good and wide selection for lunch.

We crossed the channel via the tunnel and arrived back in Colney Heath at 7pm, tired but satisfied after an excellent weekend.
